After passing all of our Novice exams, Alfred calls us to attend Father in his study.
We walk into the room warmed by a crackling fire. The smell of old books and mahogoney rise to meet us. Father indicates for us to sit in some leather chairs. They creak as we sit.
"I've noticed that you have progressed in your studies. Please enlighten me as to what you have learned." He says taking a glass of mulled wine Alfred has brought in for us.

"Well, obviously it falls on me to go first."
"I've learned that Mak Stormpeak is a fine troll with a good sense of humor and a very strong arm."
"I've learned that the crowds that attend the tournament love a good song and good entertainment. But I had already guessed that this would be true."
"I've learned that Reginald Hightower is an incompetent buffoon. How he made it into the tournament at all, let alone won a round, I cannot fathom. He also has no sense of humor and is inclined to blame others for his own failures."
"And finally, I've learned that Orek Vael is a fine fighter even without his mount, and the Black Company will be lucky to have him. He also has glowing eyes and an astral signature very similar to that of the three of us. You wouldn't know anything about that, would you?"

"I've learned that the Verdants are sore losers. If only they were as incompetent at politics as they are at battle things would probably be easier for you Father."
*takes a sip of mulled wine*
"I've learned that your Pattern must be in balance. There can't be opposition within your soul. For me, its not Wizard or Warrior, but a blending of those paths. They are not separate, but a part of me. I guess you can have a wise warrior, and a strong wizard - you don't have to choose between the two. 'Mal might say its having the right tool for the job."
"I wonder, if C. Verdant blocked your official inquires into the mysterious beatings because he was providing support to The Dagger through Cinder and his man Taes. Everyone who seems to know anything dies of massive blood wound damage before they can lift the veil on whats going on. What kind of game could the Verdants' be playing that they would sell out to a Horror, or a someone in league with a Horror? Do they think the Blood Guard would be sufficient to stop all the Horrors once the Kaer is breached? The stupidity of it is enough to drive me mad!"
*starts to chew a finger sandwich*
[OOC: What discipline is C. Verdant?]
"I've also learned that martial tournaments can be a wonderful exercise for the mind as well as the body. Defeating Orek in the championship was more luck and cunning that strength of arm. Mi'ven or E. Verdant had had to fight him, I'm fairly sure that it would have been a quick victory for the newest member of the Black Company. His Pattern was very interesting... as 'War has already pointed out. The threads twisted and knotted very much like ours do."
"I think we all learned that sometimes politics might force merit aside. I think that is why E. Verdant and R. Hightower even made the list. But, I think we can all agree that merit has a way of winning in the end. Neither of those two candidates would have finished well, whether or not we were in the tournament. So, their inclusion must have been not out of skill but out of some sort of political or monetary maneuvering."

"I also learned that you social status should limit your friends. The Bartender, Uld, has been a fountain of information. Without him, we would not have been able to put as much pressure on Cinder or the Verdants. Just as every brick is made of mud and straw, so the community of the Kaer is made of different bits. We all must work together for the community, and we can't look down at one part of the community just because it suits us. Everyone has a purpose."

"If only we could limit the social status of our enemies! Noble snobs or street thugs, pick just one! Hah!"
"Sorry, wasn't my turn."

In some of my spare time, I'd like to look into Father and Alfred's past. And their motivations. Nothing sinister, just some biographical details.
Might lead to some interesting plot hooks for later adventures...
