Hate to give away plot, but in case we don't quite get where I'm aiming, I thought I'd share this in case you have downtime and you want to work on Earthdawn in the next month or so:
Within the next 24-48 hours of in-game time, I'm anticipating massive Kaer breach - the beginning of the end of Part I! I expect about 6 months of constant fighting with the Kaer defenders constantly pushed back by sheer attrition. Lots of dead folk.
Obviously not planning to play out every day of a 6 month assault/siege. But what I was thinking was:
(1) Would be a good opportunity for people to just write stories/outlines/ideas about what they do in the meantime. As long as they don't kill the thorned elf or the Troll, and understand that it will be a retreating battle, pretty much anything goes short of killing off named Major NPCs . . .
--- i.e., kind of put the primary game on post by post hiatus while you're away, but let people do stuff to develop their characters and earn LP that doesn't require my refereeing.
--- [EDIT: probably can't beat Ghearon or the Blood Elf in a straight tup fight either :-p, they'd kick butt].
--- [EDIT: feel free to add to or develop Daiche extensively. because of where the campaign is going, I have big plans for Daiche, but they're so inchoate, you're not going to ruin it]
(2) It might also be an opportunity to do some stuff to get Spencer acclimated with Maw and Mal. Given Mes's position, it's pretty easy to see him end up distracted by various duties (depending on what you prefer for your character).
--- not to give too much away but the obvious things that come to mind are
(a) Father is not going to be participating in the fights directly. He's primarily working on a major ritual magic thing. The nature of it is wizardry, so Mes helping with it could easily eat a lot of time.
(b) Obviously the hospital is very very busy.
(c) All sorts of potential leadership potential. No formal military authority, but leading groups of townsfolks/small groups of Guards who lose their leaders type of thing.
_-- as ideas of things that might make Mes unavailable for crazy other things that Maw might be up to.
--- i.e., Mes is the oldest son of a leading basically noble, so he clearly has the most duties in a variety of roles. Maybe even sitting stand in on a couple council meetings if FAther is too busy to attend. Kind of whatever strikes your fancy, I'm pretty open.
--- feel free to develop Daiche however and add stuff.
(3) people can get days off here and there to build up to the climax of the last part of the siege, but no journeyman adepts have a week free to train (so no going to 5th circle). I'll probably figure out a number that guarantees people can spend all their LP, since talents only take a day to raise. Or just generally say if it only takes 8 hours uninterrupted, it can be fit in.
I kind of see the campaign in BROAD strokes like this:
Circle 1-4: Daiche, culminating in all our deaths or saving the city.
5-8: (Journeyman): Exploring all of Barsaive. You know, Journeying Journeymen.
9-12: (Warden): World hopping
13-15: The possibilities are endless!
