First: Starting the day after the Fight with the Dagger, we have 3 weeks and 5 days of downtime:
Groundrule: You can only really spend 8 hours doing something serious + Karma Ritual + a few quick/minor/routine things (like shopping). No 16 hour work days. So training to go up a circle will take a full 40 hours.
Also, you can't actually *level* or you'll be ineligible for the Tournament. But you can train for it as per rulebook.
Second: Advancing Circle: There are a lot of appropriate second circle trainers, we can find one willing to take us underwing.
Cost is 200 Silver.
In addition, you can find a tutor who knows the option talent you're looking for so you are considered to have "learned" it during training, even if you don't purchase it right away (just like your discipline talents). So no additional cost for that.
Sometimes, it's good to be related to a Counselor . . .

Also Fast forwarding: Upon being informed of events and handed the Warded Messanger Stone, your father reacts as follows:
Counselor Madeara: "Interesting. You've done well."
[Even for a Dragon, opening the Warded Message stone will be a challenge.]
Also, about a week later, a Messenger (you recognize from the Bar who you followed into the Ambush) Arrives with a Bag and a Note.
Inside the Bag: Bor's Stick with a Spike Driven through it. And a Note:
"Can't have bloody trolls reakin bloody havok. Bor has been takin care of. Lud says you mite want to take a second look at this stick. Asked around. Bor got it from some lizard lady, called herself 'Cinder.' I consider us even." - Uld Svez
(*notes: Uld Svez is the Bartender. Lud was his brother with the Astral Sight eye.)

Recovery tests until fully healed (assuming not enough urgency to bother using any bonuses): rolls: d10e recovery test => 9 rolls: d10e recovery test => 7 rolls: d10e recovery test => 2 rolls: d10e recovery test => 4
So two full days to heal my damage.
Then I will be spending 700 LP raising the following talents: Maneuver to rank 2 Read/Write Magic to rank 2 Spell Matrix to rank 2 Astral Sight to rank 1
Also the first three days of that I will be doing Karma Rituals for 2 karma each time (which will leave me at max karma). Once again in various public places, but I'll vary where I do it each time, no need to repeat locations in a big city. Possibly in the vicinity of where the tournament will be if possible, as advertising.
My only relevant new trick is higher Maneuver rank, so I'll be working more elaborate maneuvers in, but otherwise no particular new tricks or twists.
Karma Ritual 1: rolls: d12e acting => 3 rolls: d12e dancing => 6
Karma Ritual 2: rolls: d12e acting => 5 rolls: d12e dancing => 3
Karma Ritual 3: rolls: d12e acting => 7 rolls: d12e dancing => 7
One of these days I'll need to raise those skills so I can roll 2d6! Also I'm much luckier with the RedBrick roller but this was quicker to do in Maptool.

Bor got it from some lizard lady, called herself 'Cinder.' I consider us even." - Uld Svez I WILL take a second look at the stick. With Astral Sight. Also Swordmaster half-magic (weapon knowledge, probably won't tell me anything but you never know). Astral Sight (if it's relevant to that day, this does cause a strain): rolls: d6e + d6e Astral Sight => 5 + 4 = 9 Half-magic: rolls: d6e+d6e half-magic => 2 + 4 = 6

3 week & 5 day time expenditure for Malinous: 5 Days: Training for second Circle Weaponsmith 4 Days levelling Evaluate, Forge Weapon, Haggle, Steel Thought 5 Days training for second circle Weaponsmith 19 used so far of 26 1 week practicing craft: weapon for profit! (Gain 10 Silver)
Training Costs: 400 Silver
Net: -390!
Ah, Heck, I can't afford any Karma :-p. Good thing I started with 8! I have 4 left for the tournament. Fortunately, I can't use any Karma during the tournament because *none* of my allowed skills are Discipline Talents!

In a very evil way, with dark tendrils running along the grain of the wood and and running to the point of the spike. Looks Horror Cursed.

Before we leave the building, while we're searching, I'll use Astral Sense and Astral Sight to see if we can learn anything else.
First thread - step 9: d8d6 (4,2) = 6 2nd thread - step 9: d8d6 (2,3) = 5 Spellcasting - step 9: d8d6 (3,4) = 7 Success! and yes, i am astrally sensing Mal and 'War. (I'm just going to roll 1 effect test, if i need to roll more, let me know - or just use this one for any/all tests made... or roll in secret) Effect - step 13: d12d10 (7,8) = 15
I'll help 'War look at the stick. I'm going to a cast Astral Sense again, and use Astral Sight. I'm specifically looking to see if there are any threads coming from the club and going anywhere. But, any other information would be helpful. Astral Sight - step 8: 2d6 (4,4) = 8 I'll also use my Warrior Half Magic - swords/weaponry: step 8: 2d6 (4,5) = 9 I'll also use my Wizzard Half Magic - general magic use/rituals: step 8: 2d6 (3,5) = 8 [] we also need to start looking for this Cinder lady. We can't have horror touched people just walking the streets. We certainly can't have them spreading cursed items around.

I'd like to research in my free time about horror items, how they get cursed, and horrors that like to operate in the way we've seen.
I'd like to show the stick to Father, and also a nethermacer/weaponsmith - they tend to know more about this kind of magic.

I'd also like to send a note to Uld Svez and ask if his brother has gotten out of the trouble he was in, or if he requires further assistance. I know that he thinks we're "even" I didn't think that he owed us anything in the first place. This is honest concern (and a bit of his altruistic wizard personality showing through).

(1) Your various and sundry tests don't reveal anything unexpected/unusual/different. (2) Counselor Madeara confirms your opinion of the stick. Finds it troubling. Approves whatever course of action you decide upon w/r/t it. (3) No threads from the stick to anywhere, although that's not surprising. (4) Uld's brother Lud is laying low, and not taking any more stupid jobs. So he should be fine. Until the next stupid job. (5) I'll get you more specifics on horror cursed items later, I'll have to see what to forward from the GMs book so I get it right-enough :-).

eventually we should hire a troubador to spread our tales around Barsaive... how much would that cost?

So to summarize our leads, and how we're going about dealing with them:
1) Cinder (gave horror item to Troll) - Ask in the Downs, and her racial area about her haunts, and likely places to have a discussion with her would be. 2) Lud, Aethor (worked for The Dagger) - verify with the Bartender (who's name I know, but forgot) that at least Lud is out of this work, and can't provide us any further information. 3) Skull & Bones (worked for The Dagger) - Ask around and see if we can talk to them without them trying to fight us. I would think that convincing them not to fight us should be fairly simple considering how the last fight went (we won, and didn't kill them). 4) Little Boy Blue (worked for/with the Dagger) - Head back into the Downs or Windling area and see what more we can learn about him and his normal hang outs. Then go and ask him quesions about The Dagger and Cinder. 5) Cursed Club - secured someplace so that the wrong kind of folks don't get to it, but perferably not near us/under our protection. I think we should turn it in to Captain Redstone, and let him know what it is/what that means. In my spare time, I'll continue researching horrors, and thier abilities IRT this club. 6) keep an ear out for similar attacks to those that were previously happening, and then track those rumors down.
Do we want to question the Councilor about his cousin Aethor, or leave that for people who are more politically astute?

1) Cinder (gave horror item to Troll) - Ask in the Downs, and her racial area about her haunts, and likely places to have a discussion with her would be. I'll consider us to be doing this during our down time. She appears to have decided to lay pretty low though, or someone is hiding her. No sign of her. About the only thing you learn is that her temperament and skin tone match her name. 2) Lud, Aethor (worked for The Dagger) - verify with the Bartender (who's name I know, but forgot) that at least Lud is out of this work, and can't provide us any further information. Uld and Lud Sven, Scraggly red headed dwarven Brothers. Verified! 3) Skull & Bones (worked for The Dagger) - Ask around and see if we can talk to them without them trying to fight us. I would think that convincing them not to fight us should be fairly simple considering how the last fight went (we won, and didn't kill them). The stood around in the alley watching you loot The Dagger's corpse. They don't appear to bear a grudge. 4) Little Boy Blue (worked for/with the Dagger) - Head back into the Downs or Windling area and see what more we can learn about him and his normal hang outs. Then go and ask him quesions about The Dagger and Cinder. Someone apparently doesn't trust windlings to keep their mouths shut. He's found a week or two after the fight floating face down in the river. Appears to have been burnt a bit crispy on the outside. "Just as Horrors can mark individuals with their fearsome powers, so too can they mark places and objects. These so-called HOrror-cursed locations and items provide channels that horrors can use to influence the physical world. Almost all Horrors can channel their HOror Mark powe rthrough such things. . . . Home horror-cursed iems grant the user certain of the Horror's powers; in many gruesome cases, they also transform the user into a Horror construct . . .entire towns have fallen under a Horror's influene because some careless merchant sold a HOrror-cursed item to an inhabitant. . . . . . other Horror-cursed items . . . may contain specfic curses that affect charaacters. To break a Horror curse, the characters must usually kill the HOrror that marked the item oor place. " 6) keep an ear out for similar attacks to those that were previously happening, and then track those rumors down. The attacks appear to have stopped with The Dagger's death. Do we want to question the Councilor about his cousin Aethor, or leave that for people who are more politically astute? I leave that up to the two of you!

eventually we should hire a troubador to spread our tales around Barsaive... how much would that cost? Call it 10 * (Circle^2) Silver to have them agree to write it, and perform it from time to time at their whim. More money will tend to earn you more favor and more performances, the Troubadour also has to be convinced that the tale is worth repeating, or they wouldn't bother at all. Except for perhaps a few very unscrupulous ones who would make up stories for quite a bit more than that! But I think that might cause a talent crisis in a real troubadour . . . at least if they're caught!

So I also spend time to train (mostly) to second circle Swordmaster and second circle Illusionist. My optional talents trained will be Durability (Swordmaster) and Spell Matrix (Illusionist). I'll learn Ephemeral Bolt as my free spell.
Spent 400 silver (well, ok, actually 398 silver and 20 copper).
Character sheet updated with circle 2 stuff noted as pending.
